The Department of Justice and Community Safety has developed its first LGBTIQA+ Action Plan 2025–2028.

The plan outlines the actions we will take to improve outcomes for LGBTIQA+ people in contact with the justice and community safety systems and our LGBTIQA+ staff.  

We developed the plan in partnership with LGBTIQA+ staff across the department and external LGBTIQA+ stakeholders.

Focus areas

The plan has 6 focus areas:

Focus area 1: Improving data on our clients and workforce

We want to improve how we collect data. We will use the data to create better policies, programs, services and workforce strategies.

Focus area 2: Building capability and capacity of the department’s workforce

We want to raise the capability and competency of the department’s workforce to provide an equitable, inclusive and safe workplace for LGBTIQA+ staff, whilst also ensuring that program design and service delivery respond to the unique needs of LGBTIQA+ people and communities.  

Focus area 3: Equitable pathways to career development and leadership

We want more LGBTIQA+ staff in leadership roles. LGBTIQA+ staff should have better opportunities for career development and progression.  

Focus area 4: Creating a safer, empowering and inclusive culture

We want to create environments where LGBTIQA+ clients and LGBTIQA+ staff feel safe, respected, supported and valued.

Focus area 5: Partnering with communities to build better policies, programs and services

We want to ensure that we consult and collaborate with LGBTIQA+ communities in a robust and appropriate way when we design policies, programs and services so that they deliver the intended outcomes for clients.  

Focus area 6: An LGBTIQA+ lens is built into policies, programs and services

We want to ensure that the department’s systems, programs and services are responsive to the needs of LGBTIQA+ communities to that they are inclusive and deliver the intended outcomes for clients.
