Research priorities 2025–2028

The department is committed to producing high-quality research into gambling harm to:

  • increase understanding of gambling harm
  • inform harm minimisation strategies
  • support the continual improvement of programs, policies, services and campaigns that seek to address gambling harm.

Experiences of gambling harm are felt across a spectrum from low to severe, and a range of individual, socio-cultural and environmental determinants contribute to the harm experienced by individuals, communities and populations.

The research program identifies the distribution of harms in the community, investigates the features of gambling products, environments and marketing activities associated with the most harm and identifies opportunities to improve gambling harm prevention programs, policies, services and communications.

Several guiding principles help to ensure that the research program is delivered transparently, adheres to ethical standards and manages conflicts of interest effectively in line with departmental policies. Guidance on the application of these policies can be found here
