The aim of the research program is to build understanding of gambling harm to inform strategies to prevent and respond to gambling harm, create more effective support services and inform policy responses.

The department’s Gambling harm prevention research priorities for 2025–2028 fall broadly within the themes of gambling products and environments, community impacts of gambling, gambling harm prevention, industry marketing, and recovery and support.

Each year the department funds a range of research projects to address these priorities. This includes through investigator-led projects under a theme and commissioning of major research projects to address a specific research question.
